Folau escapes RA sanction over controversial comments

Israel Folau

ISRAEL FOLAU STANDS by his controversial comments on homosexuality and revealed he offered to walk away from his Rugby Australia contract if his position was deemed to be untenable. "Unless they repent of their sins and turn to God" in a post that was subsequently deleted.

'I felt Raelene misrepresented my position and my comments, and did so to appease other people, which is an issue I need to discuss with her and others at Rugby Australia, ' he said.

"I do not want to bring hurt to the game and want as many people playing it as possible, so when I spoke to Raelene about walking away, it was to help the game, not harm it, in the event we couldn't come to an understanding. We accept Israel's position", Castle said in a statement on Tuesday.

Following last Tuesday's meeting, Castle conceded that it was a hard issue "trying to combine religious beliefs, freedom of speech, inclusion, respect and the use of social media".

Folau also addressed the meeting he had with Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle and Waratahs CEO Andrew Hore last week, including addressing his future in the sport, revealing he offered to walk away from the sport if his views were too far apart from the organisations.

"I'm incredibly disappointed in his stance, because of how supportive Australian Rugby was with the marriage equality debate in Australia - especially supportive of diversity and inclusion", Wall, the Labour MP for Manurewa, told 1 NEWS.

"I really do hope that Israel reflects on this situation, and actually understands that he's a role model that people look up to and what he says does matter".

"This is not about money or bargaining power or contracts", Folau added.

Australia full-back Israel Folau will not be punished by Rugby Australia for anti-gay remarks he made on Instagram.

"I do it all the time when people ask me questions about my faith or things relating to their lives, whether that's in-person or on my social media accounts", he wrote. "I believe that it is a loving gesture to share passages from the Bible with others. In my heart, I know I do not have any phobia towards anyone".

"I think of it this way: you see someone who is about to walk into a hole and have the chance to save him", he continued.

"I acknowledge Raelene and Andrew have to run things in a way that appeals broadly to their executive, fans and sponsors, as well as its players and staff". But Jesus told us that when you stand up for Him in this world, you can expect backlash.
