Former MasterChef semi-finalist Matt Campbell dies

Mark Carey lends a helping hand

Professional chef Matt Campbell, 29, died in hospital on Sunday after collapsing at the 22.5 mile mark of the annual race.

By Monday evening, £51,000 had been donated.

The marathon was Mr Campbell's second in two weeks after he previously completed a race in Manchester.

In addition to the donations to his chosen charity, Brathay Trust, hundreds of runners have also pledged to run the 3.7 miles that Matt, from the Lake District, was unable to complete.

"It's been nearly 18 months since I lost my Dad and this has been the most challenging period of my life. I know you can do it!" and entered me into my first marathon; Brathay 2016 along with my brother, Josh.

"Fundraising for Brathay with the proceeds going towards their memorial appeal in my Father's name".

Matt Campbell, 29, from Kendal, collapsed at the 22.5-mile mark during Sunday's event, which took place in record 24.1C (73.3F) temperatures.

Campbell's late father had worked for the charity, which works to improve the life chances of children, young people and families affected by challenging circumstances, for eight years before his death.

Clare, meanwhile, was inspired to run for the Alzheimers Society after meeting a couple 14 years ago, one of whom died from the condition in December 2014.

Matt was an inspiration to everyone at the trust and beyond. "The exact cause of death will be established by later medical examination".

A spokesman for the show said: "We are shocked and saddened to hear the news about Matt Campbell, one of our talented contestants from previous year".

"From the whole MasterChef team, our honest condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends".

"He was such a great athlete and also a wonderful supporter of Brathay".
