Hairdresser who deliberately infected men with HIV gets life sentence

Daryll Rowe has been jailed for life with a minimum of 12 years More

He was sentenced to "life" imprisonment at Brighton Crown Court but will be eligible for parole after a minimum term of 12 years, reports the BBC.

I don't feel I can trust anyone.

Rowe is the first man in the country to be found guilty of intentionally setting out to spread HIV.

Rowe was initially diagnosed with the virus in April 2015, before he met men on the gay dating app Grindr and had sex with eight of them between October 2015 and February 2016.

"Darryl has destroyed my life".

Claiming that he was "clean" he convinced some victims to have intercourse without protection. "Mr Rowe has never shown any sympathy of compassion", his oldest victim said during an impact statement, according to BuzzFeed. I have HIV LOL" and "burn. I...

When police started looking for Rowe, he fled from Brighton to northeast England, went by the name "Gary Cole", and moved in with two men, both of whom said he gave them the virus.

During sentencing, the court heard from some of Rowe's victims in their victim impact statements about the devastating impact of contracting HIV had had on their lives.

Every day I take medication and I know I have a virus inside me that could cause a awful death. Some of Rowe's victims testified to having considered suicide after finding out they had been infected; one said he would have rather Rowe "murdered" him.

Rowe - branded grotesque and a sociopath by his victims - repeatedly lied to the authorities during the investigation into his crimes, and continued to deny them in court past year, claiming that he was cured of HIV and that he had not used sabotaged condoms.

He said: "As long as he has strength in his body, he will be a risk".

She added: "Given the facts of this case and your permissive predatory behaviour I can not see when you would no longer be a danger to gay men".

Felicity Gerry QC, defending, had highlighted comparable cases from around the world, urging the judge to pass a sentence that would not add to the "social stigma" of HIV, but inform the public the virus is not what it was in the 1990s. Police left it 18 days after his arrest before appealing to gay men to get tested for HIV if they had been sexually involved with "a man in his 20s with a Scottish accent".

The Rowe case is the first of its kind in the United Kingdom, and is an exceptionally rare thing to encounter. "To intentionally transmit HIV is a deplorable crime which one could only commit by avoiding one's own crucial treatment". "Our thoughts are with the victims in this case".

"They describe living with a life sentence as a result of your cruel and senseless acts", said the judge.
