Haley says new sanctions coming on Russian Federation

Syria air strikes: Russia 'not tampering' with chemical attack site

Ryabkov's comments on Monday came in response to remarks made by Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, who said on Sunday that Washington will impose new economic sanctions on Russian Federation for their support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an interview to the BBC said: "I can guarantee that Russia has not tampered with the site".

On CBS's "Face the Nation", Haley said the Treasury Department will announce the new sanctions and insisted the United States has sent "a strong message" about the use of chemical weapons.

The Russian Foreign Minister asked: "Why the USA and its allies had carried out air strikes the day before global inspectors were due to arrive at the site?" A fact-finding mission from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is expected to head to Douma, the site of the suspected attack.

The British ambassador Peter Wilson said Syria and Russian Federation were unable to guarantee inspectors' safety causing their trip to Douma to be delayed.

Syrian state media said the attack also struck a scientific research facility in Damascus, which the Pentagon said was used to develop, produce and test chemical and biological weapons.

The Western countries blame Assad for the attack, which thrust Syria's seven-year-old conflict into the forefront of global concern once again and heightened a diplomatic confrontation with the Kremlin.

Ryabkov said that Russia's lower house of parliament is considering legislation that would give the Kremlin the power to restrict USA imports, RIA reported.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said on Sunday that Washington was preparing new sanctions on Moscow over its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"Russian sanctions will be coming down", Haley said during a CBS interview on Sunday.

Referring to the airstrikes, Haley said: "I think everyone knows that we sent a strong message". Moscow has denied any wrongdoing. The Russian military said its chemical experts visited Douma shortly after the alleged attack and found no trace of chemical agents in ground samples.

In an official statement the ministry said that the use of chemical weapons in Syria, it said, "crossed all possible red lines" adding, "Those responsible for use of chemical weapons against civil population, including children, must be held accountable".

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, which fights alongside the Syrian army, said the US military had kept its strikes limited because it knew a wider attack would bring retaliation from Damascus and its allies and inflame the region. Doctors at the hospital where suspected victims were treated told reporters on the tour that none of the patients that night had suffered chemical weapons injuries - they were asphyxiated by dust and smoke in a bombardment. Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition Labour Party, has questioned the legal basis for Britain's involvement.

The US, Britain and France launched a series of air strikes against Syrian government targets in the early hours of Saturday in retaliation for the alleged gas attack.
