In Germany found a unique treasure of the Danish king

King Harald Bluetooth

When amateur archaeologist Rene Schön and his 13-year-old sidekick Luca Malaschnitschenko found a shiny piece of metal on a treasure hunt near Schaprode on the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen three months ago, they initially thought they had merely spotted a piece of tinfoil.

However, when they took it to the State Office, the find was revealed to be much more - a silver coin, later identified as hailing from the Viking Age trading settlement of Hedeby. As it turned out, was shining not a piece of foil, and the product of silver. Experts kept the find secret until a team dug up 400sq metres of land at the weekend.

Archaeologists from the State Office then got involved and planned a dig to uncover the complete treasure. Back in 2015, a man discovered Roman-era coins, mosaic glassware, and hobnails from a pair of shoes and last year, four 2,000 year gold torques were unearthed in England. The symbol of Bluetooth is also a mixture of two letters of runic alphabets representing the initials of King Harald.

The oldest coin in the trove is a Damascus dirham dating to 714 while the most recent is a Frankish Otto-Adelheid penny minted in 983. These dates indicate that the treasure was likely buried in the late 980s, when Bluetooth lost a battle against his rebellious son, Sweyn Forkbeard.

"We have here the rare case of a discovery that appears to corroborate historical sources", archaeologist Detlef Jantzen said. This is because of his impeccable communication skills which helped him unite modern-day Norway, Germany, Sweden and Denmark.

Among the discoveries were several silver coins bearing images of a Christian cross, believed by historians to be among Denmark's first independent coins. He ruled between 958 and 986 and came to be known as Bluetooth because of his dead, blue-ish looking tooth.

The technology, developed to wirelessly link computers with cellular devices, was named after Bluetooth because of his knack for unification.
