Acting GCIS director-general, Phumla Williams, said: "We are proud of all our participants at the Commonwealth games". If there is a breach then Peter Dutton and his department will deal with it.

Commonwealth Games Federation CEO David Grevemberg confirmed in a statement that Australian authorities are now searching for "one Rwandan and two Ugandan accredited delegates not present in the village".

Olivier Heracles Matam Matam is another athlete believed to be missing.

India said a third athlete, weightlifter Vikas Thakur, who won bronze in the 94kg weight class, was stopped on his way to the airport in relation to the incident.

"But these athletes are guests here in Australia, they are still within their visas and they have the right to travel freely", Mr Grevemberg said.

"No, no, no. They are here", he said. "Australian Border Force officers will find these people (and) they'll be held in immigration detention until they can be deported". They are expected to conclude on Sunday April 15.

'These people and others that might have a similar objective need to hear this message very clearly - they aren't going to game the system, ' he said. Fourteen of them were from Sierra Leone. "They have left the village and would be leaving for India soon", Valson said.

Six of the athletes had already competed but two had not.

The Cameroon team at the opening ceremony. Two of the eight left without competing.

Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (GOLDOC) chairman Peter Beattie said competitors should follow visa regulations.

"Our message to the half a percent of people who might think that they can overstay a visa or not act within the conditions of their visa is that Australia has very tough laws and they need to abide by the law", he said in Canberra on January 30. Both of them were anyway not competing but obviously it is a violation given that all Indian athletes had been educated about the dos and donts.

Beattie said GOLDOC anticipated some athletes would leave the Games early. There were no worries this kind of thing might happen.

"Although they have valid visas until mid-May. we are concerned because they haven't turned up for events when they are the reason they are here, " he told Macquarie Media radio on Thursday.
