IPhone X pocketed 35% of total handset industry profits in Q4 2017

The back as a different design from other Samsung phones as the dual camera is not in the centre, but on the top left of the phone.

According to a new report, Samsung was hit hard by the downturn in iPhone X sales, which saw Apple slashing order numbers in half. That's what a recent Samsung patent application suggests. And now, it appears as though Samsung is going back to its old playbook by working on a new smartphone design that blatantly copies Apple's tenth-anniversary iPhone. Other than that the patent shows that a screen has stretched to all sides on the front. Above the display is a rectangular cutout where the front-facing camera, earpiece speaker and sensors are located.

"[The] iPhone X surpassed our expectations and has been our top-selling iPhone every week since it shipped in November", Cook said. From releasing an ad taking potshots at the notch to incorporating it in a smartphone, Samsung might just have lost the bragging rights over its fiercest rival. It all began with the Essential Phone, which featured a very small notch for its front-facing camera.

Apple grew 1 per cent (YoY) even with the iPhone X being available for only two months in Q4 2017.

Hardcore Android fans hate the notch. Some would argue that notches would be able to deliver more screen real estate for users, but some find it distracting when viewing video content in landscape mode. And it seems like, Apple's biggest competition Samsung may join Team Notch soon.

With Samsung filing this patent, it doesn't necessarily mean that this Galaxy phone will become an actual product.

While the aforementioned patent offers nothing new per se when it comes to display, there is another document that has been spotted online, which reveals a second patent filed by Samsung. Sadly, it looks like there's almost no escape from the notch in 2018, because nearly every Android phone maker out there is stealing Apple's notch and using the design on their own phones.
