Jose Foundation to collaborate with governors' wives on child sexual abuse

White and blue pinwheels circled in the wind on the front lawn of the Chautauqua Municipal Building on Wednesday.

SHERIDAN -During National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, Compass Center for Families challenges residents of Sheridan to stand against child abuse and take action to support children who have been abused or neglected.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least one in four children have experienced some form of child abuse or neglect in their lifetime. She said other organizations have also joined the movement by creating community gardens to represent child abuse awareness. Each pinwheel was planted to symbolize a joyful childhood memory, but also to raise awareness on child abuse in the county.

Mayor Nic Hunter said having his son, Harrison, now 8 months old, has made him more appreciative of efforts like those of Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana to safeguard at-risk children.

Karl Bruchhaus, superintendent of Calcasieu Parish schools, said the event put him in mind of a recent incident at a local middle school where it came to light that a student was going through abuse. "This is not, 'How many touchdowns can you get",' the judge said.

"We have zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation hence all states must benefit from this movement to end CSE and protect the Nigerian child".

"It's not just about them, it's about us", she girl said in the video.

"The number of Sheridan children coming into care continues to grow and we aim to meet that need", said Susan Carr, Compass executive director. He said cases in criminal court typically garner more attention than what happens in family court proceedings.

Prevention tools include being aware of signs of abuse, reporting abuse and ensuring parents have the resources available to care for their children.
