Kendrick Lamar Wins Pulitzer Prize for 'Damn' Album

11-time Grammy victor Kendrick Lamar has won a Pulitzer Prize. This is the first time that a musician from a non-classical category has won the award.

An intimate storyteller, social commentator, avant-jazz artist and a popular rapper-Kendrick Lamer has become the very first non-classical, non-jazz artist to win the 2018 Pulitzer prize for his 2017 album DAMN.

The Pulitzer Prize is awarded for achievements in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature and musical composition in US. Lamar was born and raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton, the home of hip-hop pioneers NWA, and started making music as a 16-year-old.

Despite the wide praise for Lamar, he has yet to win the most prestigious award of the music industry, the Grammy for Album of the Year, with both "To Pimp a Butterfly" and "DAMN." losing out to pop works.

"DAMN.", released on April 14, 2017, won five Grammys, including best rap album, and the album topped several year-end lists by critics, including NPR, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, BBC News, Complex and Vulture.

The Pulitzer board has awarded special honours to Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Hank Williams.

In April past year the Pulitzer prize was awarded to a team of American newspaper New York Times.

Last March, "Duterte's War" by Mogato, Baldwin, and Marshall also won in the Investigations category, as well as being selected by Amnesty for the Outstanding Impact Award, a new award chosen from across all nominations to recognize journalism that has helped bring about important human rights change.

Explanatory Reporting: Jointly awarded to the staffs of the Arizona Republic and the USA Today Network.

The Enquirer won for "Seven Days of Heroin", which combined more than 60 journalists to tell stories through the eyes of families, first responders, courtroom officials and other viewpoints.

Andie Dominick of The Des Moines Register won the Pulitzer for editorial writing.

They shared this with The New Yorker for reporting by Ronan Farrow.

The finalists, selected by a five-person jury and presented to the board for a victor selection, also included composer Michael Gilbertson's Quartet and singer and composer Ted Hearne's Sound From the Bench.

The Pulitzer board called the album a work that captures the complexity of African-American life.
