Kenya Electoral Body in Turmoil After 3 Commissioners Resign

Wafula Chebukati

Pressure is piling on Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati to leave office.

Vice Chair Consolata Nkatha and commissioners Paul Kurgat and Margaret Mwachanya cited bad leadership by the Chairman as their main reason.

"The Commission Chair has failed to be the steady and stable hand that t steers the ship in hard times and gives directions when needed", declared the officials.

The trio who held a joint press address from a Nairobi hotel, said under Chebukati's leadership external cartels had encroached on the commission's independence.

In a statement read by Ms Mwachanya, the commissioners announced: "The institution has continued to be dysfunctional with arbitrary decision-making, leaking of internal documents to serve personal goals and pursuing personal interests".

"All of which are against the laid down laws that govern the conduct of the Commission leadership and staff", they asserted.

The resignations take effect immediately.

Senator Kipchumba Murkomen of the ruling Jubilee Party is now calling for commission head Wafula Chebukati to step down and for the IEBC to be disbanded.

The head of the Electoral Law and Governance Institute in Africa, Felix Odhiambo, says the overhaul of the commission means it will be hard to know what happened in 2017 presidential vote.

Chebukati said he had learned of the resignations through the media, and would comment later.

The resignations came at a time when Chebukati had called a crisis meeting to resolve issues affecting the electoral body after IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba was sent on a 3-month compulsory leave.
