Mohamed Salah registered his 30th Premier League of the season as red-hot Liverpool comfortably beat Bournemouth 3-0 in a relatively on-sided game at Anfield on Saturday evening.
Pre-match tributes were held on the eve of the 29th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, before Liverpool began on the front foot and Salah toed Trent Alexander-Arnold's pass from deep just wide of the right-hand post.
Salah, in his first season at Anfield, became the first Liverpool player since Ian Rush in 1986-87 to reach the 40-goal mark and only the third from the club ever to reach that landmark after Rush and 1966 England World Cup victor Roger Hunt.
It meant Kane moved within four goals of the Egyptian in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot.
Sadio Mane opened the scoring for the Reds after just seven minutes, with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino following up in the second half.
Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were also on the scoresheet as Liverpool's famous front-three enjoyed the flawless outing.
"We played Bournemouth, the rest was a few days ago and I said a few times our whole lives is Champions League qualification, so these games are all so important".
"We scored fantastic goals, although it took a bit too long for the second but we second fantastic goals".
Liverpool will now surpass a year unbeaten in home league games before Stoke City visit in a fortnight - by which time Roma will have been to town for a Champions League semi-final clash that has rather more riding on it than this game.
"Second-half I though we improved greatly, I thought we were well in the game until a brilliant second goal from their perspective kills the game". It was like "give him the ball", so we had to mix it up. "I was pleased there were signs we could compete but it came too late". Normally, in that situation, to be top of the goalscoring list at the end and win the Golden Boot, or whatever it's called, means you have been successful as a team, but we can't force it. What a number we scored as a team in the season - it's insane.
After the Premier League made their decision, Salah tweeted: "Wooooooow really?" Mane reacted quicker than the visiting players and was able to steer the rebound into the unguarded net - thus becoming the highest-scoring Senegalese in the Premier League with 44 goals.
