On the This Morning sofa, Scott Purdy, from Louth in Lincolnshire, told hosts Holly Willoughby and Phil Schofield that taking painkillers had "turned him gay", causing him to end his relationship with a woman. He said, "I never had any desire for men before this and I never looked upon men like "I want you". I know now - the fear is that I stop taking it and I go back to how I was.
Pregablin, a painkiller drug which is branded as Lyrica, is used to treat epilepsy and anxiety as well as nerve pain. However, he ended up breaking up with his girlfriend and getting back on Pregabalin, because it made him feel happy about his sexuality and gave him a liberating feeling. In a post that appeared on his webpage, he said that he did not know why some people had a reaction like that of Scott's but admits that perhaps "it can happen".
He then says he stopped taking it, and the "desire for men just left".
However, This Morning resident doctor Dr Ranj told Scott that it was unlikely that the painkillers "made him gay", cheekily saying that when he had taken them they hadn't made him "gayer".
And far from turning someone gay, one doctor has claimed that in some instances the drug can actually decrease any homosexual cravings. He is now more comfortable being gay because of Lyrica's soothing effects for anxiety that made him more relaxed and open about his gender.
He added that when it came to Purdy, "what it probably does is allow you to be able to express what was already there, I think".
'Currently I'm talking to this lad on Plenty of Fish and in a couple of weeks I'm going up to see him.
"I'm really happy now I'm on it. It was so out of the blue, especially as I experimented at a younger age and didn't want it then".
Purdy broke his foot in 2012, and said that once he switched from Codeine and Tramadol to Pregabalin, it was just "four or five days" until his sexuality felt different.
'I'm not angry because it's made me who I am'. The same firm also manufactures Viagra, a pill for treating men's sexual dysfunction.
'To date, the worldwide exposure to pregabalin is an estimated 34 million patient years.
