May defends joint airstrikes against Syria

The employment rate has hit a record high which make a rise in interest rates almost certain

Labour will lead a debate on Tuesday about Parliament's right to approve military action, or not.

May will also apply for an emergency debate to give lawmakers "an extended opportunity to discuss the military action", her office said, in what could be an attempt to draw the sting out of any opposition motion for the same.

British Prime Minister Theresa May told restive lawmakers Monday that military airstrikes on Syria were right both legally and morally, and she accused Syria and its ally Russian Federation of attempting to cover up evidence of a deadly chemical weapons attack.

The Violations Documentation Centre (VDC), a research group based in Syria that documents violations of global law, believes that Bashar al-Assad regime forces are responsible for the chemical attack on April 7 that killed over 75 people and injured hundreds more.

One former minister expressed frustration that the government "bottled it".

"Labour's acceptance of Brexit has led to weak opposition to the slow, shambolic and damaging Brexit process, with Jeremy Corbyn mostly preferring to lead on domestic issues at Prime Minister's questions each week", she said.

"It was perfectly possible for the house to have been recalled in advance, why was this not done?"

Corbyn drew jeers and shouts for his taunt that May had acted to please Trump.

Instead he has called for independent investigations into future chemical weapons attacks, despite ignoring an earlier investigation that judged the Syrian regime was nearly certainly responsible for the 2013 and 2017 sarin attacks.

"Based on the regime's persistent pattern of behaviour and the cumulative analysis of specific incidents we judged it highly likely that the Syrian regime had continued to use chemical weapons on at least four occasions since the attack in Khan Sheikhoun".

He said with or without the vote it would be "largely symbolic" and would mainly just acknowledge that Parliament has had its say.

The UK and United States have said the strikes were successful, with President Trump warning the United States is "locked and loaded" for further action if there are more chemical attacks.

A poll by Sky Data also on Monday revealed that 49 percent of British public thought the United Kingdom was right to carry out a military intervention in Syria.

Britain has said there are no plans for future strikes against Syria, but foreign minister Boris Johnson warned President Bashar al-Assad that all options would be considered if chemical weapons were used against Syrians again.

British Royal Air Force jets joined American and French warplanes and ships in hitting targets in Syria early on Saturday in response to a reported chemical attack by the Syrian Government in the town of Douma.

According to the Survation poll conducted for Mail on Sunday, 36 percent of Britons supported the attacks, while 24 percent of respondents were undecided.

"The fact that such an atrocity can take place in our world today is a stain on our humanity".

Speaking on Sky News, the fantasy fiction actor said that the greatest political mandate in British history was a "false one" fed on "lies" which "created an atmosphere that was toxic", and that comic book character Charles Xavier and Star Trek's Captain Jean-Luc Picard, both fictional personae Stewart has played, would have backed remaining in the European Union.
