Merkel endorsed the impact of the U.S. and its allies on Syria

PM Narendra modi

In the recent past, Merkel had reiterated that Germany would not participate should Washington decide to take military action against Syria for Damascus' alleged use of chemical weapons.

In the first days when the news circulated, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan highlighted that this was not the first crime that Bashar Assad committed against humanity, saying that Assad would pay a heavy price.

As the US and its allies edge toward punitive measures for a chemical weapons attack they blame on Assad, a parallel track is emerging that could possibly include sanctions against Assad's backers.

In a written statement on Saturday, Chancellor Angela Merkel underlined that the joint strike by the U.S., U.K., and France specifically aimed at destroying Syria's suspected chemical weapons capabilities and deterring further use of such banned weapons. The country often has restricted itself to supporting roles, such as the participation of a German refueling plane and Jordan-based reconnaissance jets in the current global campaign against the Islamic State group.

Post-World War II Germany typically has been reluctant to engage in military action, and parliamentary approval is required for any military missions overseas.

"We support the move by our American, British and French allies, as permanent members of he UN Security Council, assuming responsibility in this manner", she said.

Maas also said since the issue in Syria can not be resolved without Russian Federation, they have not cut off contact.

When President Donald Trump hit Syria past year, the targeted attack was strictly military - 59 Tomahawk missiles. But she added that the violation of global rules against chemical weapons is serious, and "the reactions will be appropriate".
