Mitch McConnell Shuts Down Bipartisan Effort to Protect Mueller Investigation

Why don't I just fire Mueller?"Trump said". He made his position abundantly clear on Tuesday: "I'm the one who decides what [legislation] we take to the floor. That's my responsibility as the Majority Leader, and we will not be having this on the floor of the U.S. Senate", the defiant Republican said in an interview Tuesday on Fox News.

During those 10 days, the government would be forbidden from destroying records or making any other staff changes to the team around the special counsel.

But with McConnell flexing his powers to block the bill from receiving a full vote on the floor of the Senate, those efforts are all but dead.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Trump's intentions are irrelevant because the protections are good policy to have on the books.

"I don't believe the president going to accomplish this and only like a practical thing, even though we passed on [the bill], why would he even sign it?"

Grassley, an Iowa Republican, who, like a number of Republicans, has expressed concern that the bill is an unconstitutional infringement on the president's powers as chief executive, had been preparing an amendment to the legislation, though the contents of the measure have not yet been released. Sen.

At least three of the 11 GOP members of the Judiciary panel have said they will vote against it and another five have said they have questions about its constitutionality.

That legislation is on the agenda for a committee business meeting on Thursday, but an actual vote is expected to be delayed until next week. We know that Trump already has tried to fire him, twice, but been talked out of it.

McConnell said he won't bring the legislation to the Senate floor.

Instead of explaining why Trump shouldn't fire Mueller, Stewart immediately started listing reasons why Trump's frustration is justified. "He was involved in the negotiation and signed the bill", McConnell said of Trump. Currently, there is no recourse for a special counsel after firing.

Despite the move, McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, the two top Republicans in Congress, have both expressed scepticism over whether such protective measures are necessary. Mueller, a former FBI director, is leading an investigation into the possibility of Russian interference in the 2016 election and claims of collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian entities.
