Montenegro votes for next president; favorite is pro-West

AFP: Montenegro votes for new leader with pro-Western veteran tipped to win

The middle for investigation and Tracking said after counting 60 percent of those volatility even though his opponent Mladen Bojanic won 3 4 percent that Djukanovic won about 53 per cent.

Podgorica. The people of Montenegro began voting Sunday in polls expected to see pro-Western former prime minister Milo Djukanovic elected as president of the tiny Balkan nation that is aspiring to join the EU, AFP reported.Having dominated politics in the former Yugoslav republic for almost 25 years, Djukanovic stepped down as prime minister in October 2016.

Montenegro's ruling party declared leader Milo Djukanovic the victor of Sunday's presidential election after preliminary projections showed he swept the vote and avoided a runoff.

Djukanovic, the country's dominant politician, and his Democratic Party of Socialists have mastered Montenegro for almost 30 decades.

However, the DPS and Djukanovic led Montenegro into North Atlantic Treaty Organisation past year and have pledged to complete talks for European Union membership. Djukanovic challenger is Mladen Bojanic, supported by resistance bands, for example pro-Russian kinds.

Earlier in the campaign he also accused Mr Djukanovic of being "the creator of the instability and chaos that we witness in the streets of Montenegro", referring to a rise in organised crime, including people trafficking.

Bojanic, the second ranked candidate asked his voters not to understand the result as a defeat, but as a basis for future struggle against the ruling party and refused to congratulate Djukanovic on the victory. President Filip Vujanovic is perhaps not running due to word constraints.

Previously served as prime minister and once as a president, 56-year-old Djukanovic is returning to active politics after a brief break.

Djukanovic was prime minister during a tense October 2016 parliamentary election when authorities said they thwarted pro-Russian coup attempt created to prevent the country from joining North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Djukanovic won a large enough percentage to avoid a runoff.

The fractured opposition parties supporting Bojanic include the pro-Russian Democratic Front, whose two main leaders are on trial for taking part in the alleged 2016 coup attempt. The Kremlin has denied any involvement.
