More than 100 Windrush cases being investigated by Home Office

Shadow home secretary Diane Abbott said: "It is an absolute scandal that the Home Office doesn't even know how many people they have wrongly deported".

An online petition calling for an amnesty for those who arrived in Britain from Commonwealth countries in the Caribbean as children and a lowering of the level of documentary proof required from people who have lived here since they were children has now attracted more than 136,000 signatures.

"That we send a message of reassurance to people who are here, we want to get this right for them".

The Home Office said it was making efforts to speak to Mr Haynes to advise him that there is no requirement for him to leave the UK.

"Paulette Wilson, Michael Braithwaite and Albert Thompson are just a few of those who have been detained, threatened with deportation, lost their jobs, their homes and been refused critical healthcare or social assistance".

A dedicated phone line (0300 123 2241) has also been created and the Home Office has published a fact sheet on their web site, which outlines the rights of Commonwealth citizens.

Interior Minister Amber Rudd said Monday that a team would be set up in her ministry to resolve issues.

Timothy Harris, prime minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, expressed hope that Britain would "do the right thing and make good any injustice", including through compensation.

"Before 1973 many Caribbean kids came to Britain on their parents' passport and not their own".

The Home Office is facing fresh pressure after it emerged thousands of documents relating to the Windrush generation were destroyed by the department in 2010.

He repeated the government's pledge that those who needed to formalise their status would have their cases settled in two weeks.

The row, which one MP called a "national shame", has been hugely embarrassing as it coincides with this week's meeting of the 53 Commonwealth heads of government in London.

"It is inhumane and cruel for so many of that Windrush generation to have suffered so long in this condition and for the Secretary of State only to have made a statement today on this issue", he said. She subsequently apologised to the House of Commons.

"When he was 18 he came over, he went to college as a student, we paid for him as a student to go to school... he left the country after his visa expired", she said.

She added, "I want to dispel any impression that my government is in some sense clamping down on Commonwealth citizens, particularly those from the Caribbean".

In one of her major speeches on Brexit in Florence previous year, Mrs May told those citizens: "We want you to stay; we value you; and we thank you for your contribution to our national life - and it has been, and remains, one of my first goals in this negotiation to ensure that you can carry on living your lives as before".

He added that the row could have implications as the United Kingdom leaves the European Union: "The way that the British Government deals with the Windrush generation might have implications post-Brexit, in terms of how European living in England are to be treated and vice-versa how people from England living in Europe are to be treated as well".

Speaking to HuffPost UK Tuesday, many people in Brixton - many the children and grandchildren of Windrush Britons - said the government must compensate the people who have been incorrectly targeted for possible deportation by the Home Office.

"My view is that if there is an acceptance that a wrong was done then there should be a process of restoration", he said.
