North Bay's Running Grandpa completes 5th Boston Marathon

Bob Bacon at left and Manny Sardinha of Westfield show their sense of humor Monday after the friends completed the Boston Marathon. It was Bacon's first and Sardinha's sixth consecutive Boston Marathon

It hailed for a little bit during the race.

"I had run my first marathon in Maine in October 2010, and wanted to run Boston for the Alzheimer's charity team, so just three days after I completed the Maine Marathon, I sent in my application", said Renick in an email to The Journal.

To top off those conditions the race temps hovered near freezing. There was a almost constant wall of people on either side of the road cheering for the entirety of the course. "I never felt that there was any danger of any kind".

One of those who did finish was Suffolk University alumnus Matt Durkin, '17, who also ran the Marathon in 2015. Defending champions Geoffrey Kirui and Edna Kiplagat finished second and ninth but were the only Kenyans to crack the top 10 in their races - the country's worst performance in decades. "Everyone in this city, they find out you're running the marathon and they treat you like royalty, and everyone out here is really supportive on the marathon".

Tatyana McFadden has won the women's wheelchair race at the Boston Marathon. He finished it with a time of 2:28.12. The Masurs marked that accomplishment by running together throughout the race route.

"My training schedule isn't what a typical marathon competitor would do", Price explained. Knowing there were 30,000 runners feeling the same pain I was, I knew that with the right positive thoughts I could conquer the marathon.

There's no rest for the tired though, as Miller is now preparing to fly across the pond, and run in the London Marathon this weekend. "All things considered, I ran OK, [I'm] happy to have been able to experience it and [I'm] excited for another crack at it next year". The club is New Jersey's largest running club, boasting more than 1,000 members.

Prior to the marathon, there was a vigil held on the evening of Sunday, April 15, to pay respects to those affected by the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Race organizers marked the anniversary with remembrances, moments of silence and the laying of wreaths. "I think that was part of what made the race special". "I was hurting and I was cold, but I could still be (in Boston)".

"They had really stacked the field, so I knew they were trying to get an American to win", Reed said.

Of course, a nicer day would have been icing of the cake for Price and the other participants.

On the fifth anniversary of the finish line explosions that killed three and wounded hundreds more, Linden and Kawauchi led a field of 30,000 runners through a drenching rain, temperatures in the mid-30s and gusts of up to 32 miles per hour on the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton. "There were people dropping out all over the place, even a few of the elites didn't finish". With the power of the sugar, I crossed onto Boylston Street and saw the finish. I pretty much climbed Heartbreak Hill without realizing I had done it. I just had to take it one mile at a time.

It gives McFadden five Boston Marathon wins and a record-setting 22 victories in the Abbott World Marathon Majors series.

"In the best way I could explain it was like getting put through a vehicle wash for five hours with thirty mile per hour winds".

Price's friend who ran the race as well finished in 27 place with a time of 2.32.

"Maybe one hour, " he said.

Kawauchi joked that the wind and cold were the "best conditions possible".

To be fair though, she did run at Nebraska Wesleyan University. She captured Price during the race, surprised that he was so cheerful in the harsh conditions. If it was a sunny and dry day I probably could've finished a few minutes faster.

Price definitely appreciated the effort of Smith and the others cheering him on, helping to make the race even more memorable for him.
