Pakistan supreme court hands former PM Sharif lifetime ban

Sources informed that the bill will be promulgated through presidential ordinance

Moments after the Supreme Court in a historic verdict ruled former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been disqualified for life, State Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb said decisions against Nawaz are made first and trials are conducted later.

A five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar, gave the unanimous verdict on several identical petitions pertaining to the duration of disqualification of a politician under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Pakistan Constitution, reported Samaa TV.

Article 62, which sets the precondition for a member of parliament to be "sadiq and ameen" (honest and righteous), is the same provision under which Sharif, 68, was disqualified.

"This is the same (kind of) decision that led to the hanging of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and (then) to the disqualification of an elected Prime Minister (Nawaz)", the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) party member said.

Dawn News reports that following the verdict, both Sharif and Tareen have become ineligible to ever hold public office.

Supreme Court Justice Umar Ata Bandial described the ban on Sharif as "permanent" in a judgement read to the court, clarifying the length of an earlier ruling that disqualified the former premier from office. Such a person can not contest elections or become a member of parliament, it added. On Friday, the top court said that the disqualification of the stained ex-Prime Minister stands for life.

Sharif had been disqualified by the top court in July past year over the Panama Papers scandal. Likewise, the court allowed Jamshed Dasti to contest the election, but disqualified Rizwan Gill, Samina Khawar Hayat and Amir Yar under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution.
