Playboy model free to discuss Trump 'affair'

Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model, reached the agreement Wednesday with American Media Inc. "My goal from the beginning was to restore my rights and not to achieve any financial gain, and this settlement does exactly that".

The settlement means McDougal is no longer bound by the contract with AMI, the parent company of the National Enquirer, which bought - but never published - her story for US$150,000 in the months before the 2016 presidential election. The lawsuit had claimed AMI worked secretly with Mr. Trump's associates and McDougal's own lawyer at the time, Keith Davidson, to bury her story about the alleged extramarital affair.

Mr Trump was the host of NBC reality show The Apprentice at the time.

When news got out that McDougal was going to share the story of her alleged affair with Trump, the publisher acquired the rights to the story.

Daniels also has detailed an alleged affair with the president.

You'll recall, McDougal sat down with Anderson Cooper last month for a CNN special.


McDougal had accused American Media, whose chairman is a Trump friend, of misleading her into signing the contract and Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen of intervening inappropriately.

On Wednesday, the company said in a statement that it was "pleased to reach an amicable resolution with Karen that provides both sides what they wanted as a result". She was told "the rights to publish her story were worth millions", according to the lawsuit.

"It's a total win", McDougal attorney Peter Stris told the Times "We got everything we were fighting for - she got out of the contract, gets the life rights back and owes A.M.I. nothing more". As part of a settlement, the company is entitled to as much as $75,000 of any profit she makes off her story.

The settlement precludes any of that from happening, at least in Ms. McDougal's civil case, though Mr. Stris said he expected federal investigators to eventually secure everything they need to fully vet the process behind the deal.
