Political adviser to Syria's Assad: Major victory over western missiles

Fighter jets were seen taking off from a British Royal Air Force base in Cyprus early on Saturday

Trump said the US was prepared to sustain economic, diplomatic and military pressure on Assad until he ends what Trump called a criminal pattern of killing his own people with internationally banned chemical weapons.

Allied missiles struck at the heart of the Syrian chemical weapons arsenal, aiming to punish the Assad government for a suspected poison gas attack against civilians and deter the possible future use of such banned weapons.

What's unclear is where that red line now stands.

On Saturday, the United States, France and Britain launched 105 missiles targeting chemical weapons facilities in Syria.

Although the White House and the Defense Department made it clear that they meant to pursue only the one strike unless Syria used chemical weapons again, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, underscored that the United States is "locked and loaded" in her statement on Saturday.

Sarin had previously appeared to be the threshold for intervention.

Mr Trump used the term to conclude a tweet on Saturday morning following the overnight attacks, after hailing the strikes as "perfectly executed" and thanking the United Kingdom and France. A sarin attack in 2013 was also what almost brought then-President Barack Obama to strike Syria.

Instead, they say foreign governments reacting this way now-only when chemicals were used sends Syrians President Bashar Al -Assad a clear message. That did not mean military strikes would continue; in fact, Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said no additional attacks were now planned.

"Every city in the Middle East that has a water purification system probably has some chlorine".

Russian news outlets Monday quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying Syria's Pantsir-S1 was almost 100-percent effective in repelling the US -led airstrikes early Saturday. "The fact he was making this more normal and that Russian Federation was covering this up, all that has got to stop".

"Chemical weapons were used on Syrian men, women, and children in Douma".

Earlier this month, four Iranian military personnel were killed in an air strike on Syria's T4 air base, also in Homs.

He did not rule out sarin use.

Members of the Trump administration, including USA defence secretary Jim Mattis, suggested that the focus of the strike had to be narrowed down to chemical weapon sites to minimise civilian casualties and avoid an escalation with Mr Assad's backers, Iran and Russian Federation.

She went on to list the evidence that Syrian regime had to be behind the attack, including witness and NGO reports, as well as the fact that the military hardware required for such an attack could not have come from "Islamic State" terrorists or other Syrian rebels.

Syrian activists said more than 40 people were killed but Syria and Russian Federation deny the attack and Russian Federation even accused Britain of staging the attack.

Ex-assistant secretary of state PJ Crowley, writing for the BBC, said the use at that time "represented a serious misreading of the challenge", adding: "But Syria isn't Iraq".

Iran, which has also backed Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad since the conflict began in 2011, also warned of "regional consequences". Moscow criticised the joint United Nations and OPCW inquiry as flawed.

Ahead of the latest strikes, Haley signaled in the Security Council on Friday that any action by Washington would not be in response to just the attack in Douma.

According to Human Rights Watch, chemical attacks - what President Trump referred to as a "red line" - have been deployed dozens of times since 2013 by both state and non-state actors.

"We want to live in peace".

"When our president draws a red line, our president enforces the red line", Haley said at an emergency United Nations meeting called by Russian Federation.
