Pulitzer Prize awarded for Harvey Weinstein expose

Kendrick Lamar Variety Hitmakers

The same week it celebrates its first birthday, Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. has just won a Pulitzer Prize.

Lamar is not only the first rapper to win the music prize; it is the first time the award has been given to an album that is neither classical nor jazz music.

Kendrick's album is described by Pulitzer board members as "a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life". His piercing and sharp raps helped him become the voice of the generation, and easily ascend as the leader in hip-hop and cross over to audiences outside of rap, from rock to pop to jazz.

The Pulitzers, the most prestigious honours in American journalism, have been awarded since 1917.

The New York Times and the New Yorker won the public service prize for sexual misconduct reporting that galvanized the #MeToo movement. The ties fuelled special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into alleged Russian attempts to influence the presidential election.

The New York Times and New Yorker magazine have won a joint Pulitzer for their reporting on sexual harassment allegations in Hollywood.

The movie producer's lawyers have said he denies non-consensual sexual contact with anyone.

The winners are being revealed Monday afternoon at Columbia University.

Finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in music were Michael Gilbertson's "Quartet", which debuted last February at Carnegie Hall, and Ted Hearne's "Sound from the Bench", a 35-minute cantata released last March.

Kendrick Lamar will now has a Pulitzer Prize to go with all his Grammy Awards.
