Pupil 'crushed to death by seat' in van outside OH school

The coroner says the teen was crushed to death by a folding chair in the vehicle

At 3:21 p.m. on Tuesday, 16-year-old Kyle Jacob Plush called 911 screaming.

OH authorities are investigating how a student was crushed to death in the back of a minivan at a school parking lot despite calling 911 two times with his exact location.

At one point, a deputy sent to the scene called in and questioned whether the call had been a prank, WCPO reported.

When Plush called 911, he said he was in a parking lot by the private school where he was a sophomore student and he described his van. His body was found by a family member at 9 p.m., nearly six hours after his first 911 call.

The Hamilton County coroner ruled Kyle Plush's death as accidental asphyxia due to chest compression from being stuck in the trunk well underneath the seat in the back of his 2002 Honda Odyssey van. "I am trapped inside a gold Honda Odyssey van in the (inaudible) parking lot of Seven Hills".

Cincinnati District 2 police and a Hamilton County deputy sheriff responded to the area but could not locate the distressed caller, according to police and the sheriff's office. They tried calling the number back but it went rang to voicemail.

"I'm going to die here", Plush tells a dispatcher after repeatedly asking for help.

Nick Francis, director of Experiential Learning at Seven Hills School, said in a 911 call a security guard contacted him and told him to call 911 because they found a kid in his vehicle. Plush was there, and he called 911 again. Saunders said there are several parking lots associated with the school. The teen was trying to reach his tennis equipment, according to the newspaper, when the seat "flipped up and over toward the back hatch, pinning him upside down beneath the seat". The call lasted more than 2 and a half minutes. Around 9 p.m., 911 dispatchers received a call that Kyle had been found in the minivan. The police and sheriff's department are conducting separate investigations, and the county prosecutor's office also is investigating, reports say. She said an app on her phone showed he was still at Seven Hills.

Isaac, the police chief, said responding officers found Plush in the van, "not breathing and unresponsive".

Then another caller, who identified himself as a night-shift worker at the school, called police to report that the teen, who was unresponsive, was trapped in the van - "turned over in his seat and stuck".

"Help, help, help", Plush said in his first call.

"He was a young man of keen intelligence, good humor, and great courage, and this whole community feels this loss very deeply", the letter stated.
