Supreme Court refuses to hear ex Illinois governor's appeal

Supreme Court won't hear appeal by former...

Back in 2008 when Obama was running for president, then IL governor Rod Blagojevich was busted for trying to sell Obama's vacated Senate seat. A second issue raised in the petition was whether a federal court may decline to address an argument that a shorter sentence is needed to avoid sentence disparities.

Blagojevich was hoping for a hearing from the Supreme Court but is out of luck.

Prosecutors said Blagojevich, a Democrat and former contestant on President Donald Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice" reality TV show, solicited campaign contributions in exchange for raising pediatric healthcare reimbursement rates and legislation supporting his state's horse racing industry.

Blagojevich's lawyers had wanted the high court to take up his case to make clear what constitutes illegal political fundraising. Blagojevich also tried to sell or trade the Senate seat that Obama vacated after winning the 2008 USA presidential election, prosecutors said. They argued that politicians are vulnerable to prosecution because the line between what's allowed and what's illegal is blurry.

The former governor's wife Patti Blagojevich is unhappy with the court's decision.

This morning the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an effort from former IL governor Rod Blagojevich to get the high court to reconsider his conviction on corruption charges. "Rod, Amy, Annie and I could not be more disappointed in the decision today by the U.S. Supreme Court" said Blagojevich's Patti in a written statement released late Monday morning. The court's refusal to hear Blagojevich's appeal effectively puts an end to his conventional legal options.

Blagojevich, 61, began serving his 14-year prison sentence in 2012.

In 2017, Chicago Magazine published a story about Blago's life in prison.
