Syria war: Trump says missiles 'will be coming'

Syrian attacks escalate tensions among global powers

Syrian television called the attacks a "flagrant violation" of worldwide law, and Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, derided them as a "military crime".

One of the officials noted that Syria and Russian Federation relocated their equipment and personnel a year ago - the first and only other time Mr Trump ordered missile strikes on Syria in response to a chemical weapons attack.

Just weeks ago, Trump said he wanted to end USA involvement in Syria and bring American troops home to focus on the homeland.

Senior Russian figures, including the head of the military, warned that United States missiles will be shot down and their launch sites targeted if Russian personnel come under threat, the report said. Earlier, Russian officials said some missiles were intercepted by the Soviet-made antimissile batteries used by Syrian forces. But on Thursday, Trump tweeted: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

Did Trump tip his hand?

The Pentagon refused to comment further on potential future military operations in response to Trump's tweet.

The strikes were in response to a suspected gas attack on the rebel-held city of Douma last weekend. At one point, he blamed the tensions on Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his investigation into Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election.

Targeting air defense systems or locations closer to Damascus would send a stronger message but would risk more casualties as well as increase the chances of escalating the conflict, he added.

Mattis was to meet with Trump later Wednesday. Syria's Foreign Ministry said it was not surprised by the U.S.' "reckless escalation" via Trump's tweets, the state-run news agency SANA reported, while Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a Facebook post that "smart missiles should fly toward terrorists, not the legal government that has been fighting global terrorism for several years on its territory".

The Kremlin spokesman is warning the USA and its allies against any steps that could destabilize the situation in Syria.

"The combined American, British and French response to these atrocities will integrate all instruments of our national power: military, economic and diplomatic", Trump said.

The meeting will take place in the wake of Trump's tweet warning Russian Federation to "get ready" for "nice and new and smart'" missiles that "will be coming" to Syria.

USA stock index futures fell sharply on Wednesday amid rising tension between Russian Federation and America.

French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that France wants to launch a diplomatic initiative over Syria that would include Western powers, Russian Federation and Turkey.

"Don't discount the possibility of Tomahawk-capable submarines in the region", Kirby said.

"Cabinet agreed the Prime Minister should continue to work with allies in the United States and France to coordinate an global response".

He said the strikes were unlikely to curb the government's ability to produce or launch new attacks. France is already involved in the USA -led coalition created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.

His choice of words recalled a similar claim associated with President George W. Bush following the US -led invasion of Iraq.

Prime Minister Theresa May held a special cabinet meeting to weigh whether Britain should join in any possible military action.

Earlier this month, a United Nations commission of inquiry released a report accusing the regime of committing war crimes in Eastern Ghouta, including the use of chemical weapons against civilians. John Bolton officially began work on Monday, and attended the Cabinet meeting with Trump. He has pressed his aides and United States allies to develop a more muscular response to the weekend chemical attack after strikes previous year did little to prevent the Syrian regime from continuing their assault on civilians.

Relations between Russia and the West have been steadily deteriorating over recent weeks due to Moscow's support for the Syrian government as well as the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy on British soil, which the West has blamed on Russia.
