Syrian state media report new missile attack in Homs region

White House works to fill its own vacuum in Syria with allied Arab forces

On Monday, Syrian and Russian authorities prevented investigators from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons from going to the scene, the head of the OPCW said, blocking global efforts to establish what happened and who was to blame.

But they have made none of that evidence public, even after they, along with Britain, carried out airstrikes on Saturday, bombing sites they said were linked to Syria's chemical weapons program.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday that Staffan de Mistura embarked on the consultations following a meeting Monday with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the Arab League summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia "and in view of current tensions".

The comments by Mr Bozdag came after the French centrist said on Sunday that Turkey's support of the missile strikes against Syria showed it had "separated" from Russian Federation, the Syrian regime's unwavering ally.

The US, France and the United Kingdom all say open source information and intelligence prove that the Syrian government was behind the attack. "They were not injured and returned to Damascus".

The U.N. security team entered Douma to assess the situation ahead of the planned visit by inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), said the sources, who had been briefed on the team's deployment. Russian Federation has denied a chemical attack took place at all, saying it was faked.

The rebel group based in Douma announced its surrender hours after the suspected chemical attack, and the last rebels left a week later, hours after the Western retaliation strikes.

On Wednesday, OPCW Director General Ahmet Üzümcü told a closed-door meeting at the body's Hague headquarters that shots were fired in the vicinity of the team on Tuesday as they visited the suburb to determine whether it was safe for inspectors to enter.

Instead, officials have offered up 22 people as witnesses for OPCW to interview.

"Vladimir Putin, in particular, stressed that if such actions committed in violation of the UN Charter continue, then it will inevitably lead to chaos in worldwide relations", a Kremlin statement said. They were initially blocked by the Syrian government and its ally, Russia, on Monday.

Russian Federation has rejected France's proposal at a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting that called for the launch of an independent investigation over an alleged chemical attack that struck the former rebel-held town of Douma in Syria's Eastern Ghouta.

The OPCW is investigating reports that government forces gassed sites in Douma on April 7, when the town was still held by rebels and home to tens of thousands of people - residents and others who were displaced by fighting elsewhere.

Syrian state media reported Tuesday that inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons had entered the town of Douma, but Syria's United Nations ambassador, Bashar Ja'afari, later said that only a United Nations advance security team had entered.

The alleged attack was met with "triple assaults" by the US, France and the United Kingdom, through coordinated strikes on three presumed chemical facilities run the government.

Russian Federation has condemned the allied strikes on Sunday but refrained from responding to the attack on its ally, Syrian President Bashar Assad. State television said on Tuesday that rebels in Dumayr had also agreed to withdraw.
