Toyota promotes talking vehicle technology

"We believe that greater DSRC adoption by all automakers will not only help drivers get to their destinations more safely and efficiently, but also help lay the foundation for future connected and automated driving systems", Lentz said. Vehicles that can communicate with each other can warn of heavy traffic, potholes, accidents, bad weather or other road hazards that can get in the way of a commute. This data is broadcast up to 10 times per second to nearby vehicles, which can identify risks and provide warnings to avoid crashes.

V2V and V2I applications utilizing DSRC have the potential to significantly reduce most types of crashes through real-time advisories on road conditions, traffic congestion, accidents, construction zones and even parking availability, alerting drivers to road conditions that may be hard to see.

The technology "has been tested and proven over the last several years and is already being used in many parts of the country", the group said.

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to start selling USA vehicles that can talk to each other using short-range wireless technology in 2021, potentially preventing thousands of accidents annually.

The US Transportation Department has yet to decide whether to adopt a pending proposal that would require all future vehicles to have the advanced technology.

Consumers Union, the advocacy division of Consumer Reports welcomed Toyota's announcement and urged other manufacturers to roll out V2V technology. The Obama administration proposed giving automakers at least four years to comply. The detail of the proposal insisted all vehicles "speak the same language through a standard technology". Today, 92 percent of all Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in the United States have Toyota Safety Sense or Lexus Safety System + with AEB standard, and other automakers' deployment of this life-saving technology is accelerating, three years ahead of the 2022 industry target.

DSRC communicates using 7 channels of the 5.9 GHz spectrum band allocated for Intelligent Transportation Systems.

"We need to make a technology choice when there's no regulatory requirement in place", said John Kenney, director of networking research at the Toyota InfoTechnology Center in California.

The automaker reports it and its Lexus brand became the first to launch and sell vehicles with the DSRC technology. As of March 2018, more than 100,000 DSRC-equipped Toyota and Lexus vehicles were on the road in Japan.

But the push for a vehicle-to-vehicle, or V2V, communications rule has stalled amid President Donald Trump's drive to deregulate, according to Bloomberg. The US is a big market and certainly will benefit by this.
