Trump says Syria strike was 'perfectly executed'

Could not have had a better result.

May is not obliged to win parliament's approval before ordering military action, but a non-binding constitutional convention to do so has been established since a 2003 vote on joining the US -led invasion of Iraq.

This frame grab from video provided by the government-controlled Syrian Central Military Media, shows missile flying over the capital Damascus during airstrikes by the United States, France and Britain, in Syria, Saturday, April 14, 2018.

In a statement from the Kremlin, Mr Putin said Moscow was calling an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

A clear call-out by Trump on Friday for Russian President Vladimir Putin to demand Russian troops leave Syria and stop supporting Assad would have been a start, he said.

United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley took a veiled shot at the Obama administration during remarks Saturday about US airstrikes against Syria, saying when President Donald Trump draws a "red line", he enforces it. "Mission Accomplished!" Trump tweeted.

At a Pentagon briefing, Mr Dunford said the latest air strikes were planned to minimize the risk of casualties among Russia's forces in Syria.

With more than 100 missiles fired from ships and manned aircraft, the allies struck three of Syria's main chemical weapons facilities, according to US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Joseph Dunford. He said Syria's air defenses were ineffective and that numerous more than 40 surface-to-air missiles fired by the Syrians were launched after the allied attack was over. He said the USA knew of no civilians killed by allied missiles.

Map of Syria and targets the US, Britain, and France hit on April 13. Russia's military said Syrian air defense units downed 71 out of 103 cruise missiles fired by the allies. Syria has denied the accusation.

Chief Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said Saturday that "there has been a 2,000 percent increase in Russian trolls in the past 24 hours".

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation representatives planned a special session to hear from U.S., British and French officials.

The operation was "precise, overwhelming and effective", McKenzie said, adding it will set their chemical weapons program back "for years". White said she could not go into detail about that evidence. They will lose years of research and development data, specialized equipment and expensive chemical weapons precursors.

"The attack this morning against Syria is a crime", he said. Putin added that Russian military experts who inspected Douma found no trace of the attack.

British Prime Minister Theresa May similarly declared "this is not about intervening in a civil war". "When our president draws a red line, our president enforces the red line".

Germany also did not take part, although Chancellor Angela Merkel issued a statement backing the action. She says the US was confident that they had "significantly degraded his ability to use chemical weapons ever again".

The danger is how limited the message is if the operation focuses exclusively on the West's abhorrence for Syria's use of chemical warfare, said John Schanzer, a Middle East and counterterrorism expert who worked as an analyst for the USA department of the treasury.

"Initial assessments are that this target was destroyed", he said. Both Syria and Russian Federation, its biggest supporter, have denied involvement in the attack.

Dunford said the US did not coordinate targets with or notify the Russian government of the strikes, beyond normal airspace "de-confliction" communications. But the description from an ally put things differently. French Defense Minister Florence Parly said that "with our allies, we ensured that the Russians were warned ahead of time".

U.S. officials said they gave Russian Federation no specific warnings of the attacks or the targets, but used the usual hotline with Moscow's military to ensure the airspace was clear.

The Syrian government is believed to have been responsible for dropping a barrel bomb with chemical agents on a civilian population near Damascus a week ago.

Alex Jones on Trump launching strikes in Syria... He authorized a barrage of Tomahawk cruise missiles to hit a single Syrian airfield in April 2017 in retaliation for Assad's use of sarin gas against civilians.

Mattis and Trump made sure to specifically mention they were not targeting foreign interests, but were deliberately going after the Assad regime's chemical-weapons capabilities.

Syrian regime media termed the strikes "a flagrant violation of global law" and said the intervention "is doomed to fail", while Syrians crowded onto the streets of Damascus in noisy demonstrations of defiance.
