Trump to pardon Scooter Libby, Bush official convicted of lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation

"You would have to believe that the president picked the Scooter Libby out of a hat, out of the thousands of people seeking a pardon, this was a complete coincidence", Schiff said.

He was originally sentenced to 30 months in prison and was fined $250,000, but was ultimately spared jail time when then-President George W. Bush commuted his sentence.

Trump has granted two other pardons since taking over the White House, a move usually reserved for a president's final year in office. "Hopefully, this full pardon will help rectify a very sad portion of his life".

Libby had insisted he had a different memory of events than other witnesses, and he didn't intend to deceive investigators. But some suggest that new changes in Trump's inner circle could account for the pardon. The one he has received politicizes national security. Comey said in an interview with ABC News that Trump was "morally unfit to be president".

But the most logical speculation revolves around the theory that the president is signaling his willingness to pardon individuals who evade the truth - or outright lie - when questioned under the current Mueller investigation.

Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

President Trump and his staff are desperate to make parallels between Libby's case and the current FBI investigation. "You know, many people think that Scooter Libby was the victim of a special counsel gone amok", Conway said. The case was handled by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, who was appointed by Comey when he was a deputy attorney general.

According to the White House, there are no current plans to offer pardons over the Russian Federation investigation.

Trump's characterization of Comey, whom he fired previous year, is the result of Comey's newly published and monumentally unflattering book about the president and his administration.
