US, UK announce "precision strikes" on Syria

US, UK announce

French President Emmanuel Macron said that France had joined the U.S. and Britain to target "the capacities of the Syrian regime to produce and use chemical weapons". "It is not about regime change". "It is about a limited and targeted strike that does not further escalate tensions in the region and that does everything possible to prevent civilian casualties".

Speaking in Downing Street, May said the military strikes should be a "warning to Russia" before holding the Syrian government accountable for the chemical attack.

US President Donald Trump has talked with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May on phone over the three nations' collective strikes on Syria.

But the prime minister may not find such backing when she faces parliament on Monday, where some lawmakers are angry that May took military action without their approval - a process that has increasingly become a tradition in Britain.

The US, UK and France have launched military strikes on Syria following the suspected chemical attack by the Assad regime.

"We are prepared to sustain this response until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents", the USA president said in a televised address.

Britain has blamed Russian Federation for the poisoning - a charge vehemently denied by Moscow which has accused London of failing to come up with evidence for its claims.

Four Tornado jets from the Akrotiri base in Cyprus fired eight missiles at a military facility near Homs where it was assessed that Syria had stockpiled chemicals, the Ministry of Defence said.

"We can not tolerate the normalisation of the use of chemical weapons", he said in a statement.

The joint attack by the United States, Britain, and France, which began at 3:55 a.m. local time (0055 GMT), launched some 110 missiles targeting Syrian military sites in the Syrian capital Damascus and elsewhere, Syria's state news agency SANA said, citing the military.

However, opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, a fervent anti-war campaigner, called the strikes "legally questionable" and said May should have recalled parliament from recess and "not trailed after Donald Trump".

Polls in recent days have shown public wariness of military intervention in Syria, with Britain still haunted by its participation in the US-led invasion of Iraq.

For his part, the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Gerard Batten, opposed the British military action in Syria.

But they backed action in Iraq the following year, and again in Syria in 2015, strictly limiting strikes to targets of the Islamic State group.

So there is no practicable alternative to the use of force to degrade and deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Regime.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said sidelining parliament was "a serious mistake", while leader of the Green Party Caroline Lucas accused May of timing the strikes to "avoid a debate in parliament", which she described as "outrageous".
