US Warns of New Syrian Attack if Chemical Weapons Used Again

For residents of Syrian capital attack comes as a disorienting predawn barrage of light and sound

Also Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on the phone, and they agreed that the airstrike on Syria seriously damages the prospects for a political settlement in the country.

"Vladimir Putin, in particular, stressed that if such actions were committed in violation of the United Nations charter continue, then it will inevitably lead to chaos in global relations", the statement said.

"Putin stressed that if such actions, committed in violation of the UN Charter, continue, it will inevitably lead to chaos in worldwide relations", RIA added.

Inspectors from the global chemical weapons watchdog have been unable to access sites controlled by Russian Federation and the Syrian regime in the town of Douma to investigate an attack on 7 April that killed dozens and prompted US-led missile strikes on Friday night.

The airstrike was triggered following reports of an alleged chemical attack by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that left 40 people dead in the town of Douma, outside the capital city of Damascus.

Trump's letter to congressional leaders cited the rationale he gave publicly Friday night when he announced that the USA and allies Britain and France were firing missiles into Syria in response to an alleged poison gas attack on the moderate opposition near Damascus the previous week.

Shouts of "Allah, Syria, and only Bashar", a reference to Assad, rang out.

In 2017, a suspected Syrian government chemical attack killed scores of people, including children, in the northwestern province of Idlib. The OPCW had recorded 390 allegations of the use of banned chemicals in Syria since 2014 he said, and a failure by the OPCW to act risked allowing "further barbaric use of chemical weapons".

About 45 human rights and aid groups urged U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday to appoint a team of independent investigators to determine blame for toxic gas attacks in Syria. U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley had said a decision was coming Monday for sanctions against Russian Federation for enabling the Assad government to continue using chemical weapons, but the White House did not commit to that timetable.

"No Syrian weapon had any effect on what we did", said McKenzie.

Defense Secretary James Mattis said Friday night that the United States was expecting a disinformation campaign by those aligned with the Assad regime.

He said "ten days ago President Trump wanted to withdraw from Syria". For now, it doesn't appear that Russian Federation is heeding the call by U.S. State Department Press Secretary Heather Nauert who said that Russian Federation "needs to take responsibility".

Britain and France on Saturday joined the US-led missile strikes, which came a week after a deadly attack on the town of Douma where civilians were hit with chlorine and sarin according to the Western powers.

"Last night, operations were very successful", Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said at a briefing Saturday morning.

But Russia has blocked countless resolutions against its Syrian ally and the regime has appeared determined to continue its military reconquest of the country. This doesn't mean, however, that they are ready to accept [that]. USA officials said they gave Russian Federation no specific warnings of the attacks or the targets, but used the usual hotline with Moscow's military to ensure the airspace was clear. "The three facilities are - or more appropriately, were - the fundamental components of the regime's chemical weapons warfare infrastructure", McKenzie said.

Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Fayssal Mikdad said Monday his country was ready to facilitate the OPCW team in any way to carry out its mission, the state-run SANA news agency reported, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not respond directly to CNN's question on whether Russian Federation had blocked the experts.
