VAR awards penalty during half time of Bundesliga match

Mainz VAR penalty madness

VAR confusion reigned in the Bundesliga as Mainz and Freiburg players had to be recalled from the half-time break after a penalty was belatedly awarded.

Supporters also forced the game to be paused by throwing rolls of toilet paper on to the pitch as a protest against the Bundesliga's introduction of matches on Monday nights. Things soon took a turn for the freakish, however, when the official communicated with the VAR and came to the conclusion that perhaps it should have been a penalty.

De Blasis eventually added a second goal for the hosts late in the game following a mistake by Freiburg keeper Alexander Schwolow.

As the players departed the pitch, Winkmann was told to consult VAR and ran over to the other side of the pitch to watch the replay on a monitor.

Referee Guido Winkmann, who'd allowed play to continue, then blew for half-time and was on his way off the pitch when notified by video referee Bibiana Steinhaus, who was watching in Cologne, that he should check a replay.

With the scores level at 0-0 in stoppage time, Mainz appealed for a penalty when the ball appeared to strike a Freburg player on the hand to prevent a cross from reaching its intended target.

The problem is not the technology, it is the process.

VAR is set to be used at the World Cup, though Premier League clubs decided against using it in the 2018-19 season after deeming that more testing was required.

In this case you've got a couple thousand fans off to the bar and they come back thinking it is 0-0.
