Americans' anxiety levels leaped higher this year, poll finds

Girl with rope tangled around her head

Overall, 39 percent of respondents said they're more anxious than they were previous year, according to the American Psychiatric Association (APA) survey, which was released Monday. That's down five points from past year.

Compared to 38 percent of men aged between 18 to 49 years, 57 percent of women in the same age reported to feel more anxious in 2018 than 2017.

As many as 86 percent said they believed a person's mental health impacts their physical health, up from 80 percent the year before, while three quarters said they believed that untreated mental illness has a significant negative impact on the USA economy.

"This poll shows US adults are increasingly anxious particularly about health, safety and finances".

Unsurprisingly, politics has also been a big cause of worry in America this year, with 56 percent of people reporting anxiety and 20 percent reporting extreme anxiety about the impact of politics on their daily lives. "It highlights the need to help reduce the effects of stress with regular exercise, relaxation, healthy eating and time with friends and family", Everett continued. More than half of women 18-49 years, 57 percent, reported being more anxious, compared to 38 percent of men the same age, per the study. Majority of the participants (86 percent) believe that mental health can influence a person's physical health - a 6-percent increase from 2017's score of 80 percent. Americans were meanwhile less concerned about politics and relationships than they were past year.

The poll also found: The overall anxiety score was 11 points higher among people of color than among whites; respondents were almost equally concerned about health, safety and paying bills, and somewhat less concerned about politics and relationships; and that people with Medicaid are more anxious than people with private insurance. Meanwhile, 35 percent of people said this made them feel extremely anxious.

Of the five categories, Americans have the greatest anxiety in paying bills.

People were least anxious about their relationships, although 48 percent of people still reported some level of anxiety.

The respondents were less concerned about the remaining two areas they were asked about in the poll: politics and interpersonal relationships.

In another APA survey, however - one conducted last December - 63 percent of Americans said the future of the nation was a significant source of stress and 59 percent agreed with the statement that "the United States is at the lowest point they can remember in history".
