Area postal carriers hosting food drive

More than 71 million pounds were collected around the country-from more than 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states and USA territories. Residents were encouraged to leave non-perishable, non-breakable and non-expired food at their mailboxes.

After all, it takes the whole community to help stamp out hunger. Employees at the insurance company collected and donated 667 pounds of non-perishable food items, she said.

Those living in Green Bay helped put food on the table of those in need by participating in the nation's largest single-day food drive.

Blue bags and cardboard boxes full of food were out on front lawns Saturday morning as a way to fight hunger in the Chippewa Valley. "We have counties that we serve that practically have food deserts in them and we're trying to get food out to everybody we can".

Richard Hatzenbuhler says, "It feels great to help out the community".

Last year, postal carriers collected 75.3 million pounds of food, assisting an estimated 30 million families.

"And today is the date that they are to set them out at their mailbox and we'll pick them up", city letter carrier Curtis Lewis said.

The donations go to CAC to distribute to food panties in the area.

You can also make a cash donation. A pilot drive was held in 10 cities in October 1991 and it proved so successful that work began immediately on making it a nationwide effort.

"The food will go to probably five or six different organizations", said Danny Avery, director of United Way of Lowndes County. "It's a really big impact, for my pantry alone, which is 'Manna for Life Food Pantry, ' that provides us with several months of extra groceries that we can hand out", Clements added.
