AU condemns Israel's "disproportionate" use of force against Palestinians

AU condemns Israel's

"This provocation will only worsen the problems in the region and cause a deeper mark in the Israeli-Palestinian relationship, and will make peace in the region more hard".

"Jerusalem is an internationally recognised disputed territory, and the fair division of it will be a component of any enduring peace deal".

Israel has defended its actions, and the USA has voiced its support.

The military also said one of its fighter jets had struck five targets at a Hamas training facility in Gaza.

Other worldwide powers worry that the U.S. move could also inflame Palestinian unrest in the occupied West Bank, which Israel captured along with East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war.

Palestinians want the eastern part of the city as the capital of a future independent state of their own.

"The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) will act forcefully against any terrorist activity and will operate to prevent attacks against Israelis", the military said in a statement.

The Islamist group aims to break a decade-long Israeli blockade on goods flowing in and out of Gaza.

Mr Erdogan and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas spoke by phone on Monday, a presidential source said.

Earlier Monday, the Palestinian UN envoy urged the United Nations' most powerful body to condemn the killings. At least 2700 were reported injured. It said shots were also fired at soldiers.

United Nations human rights spokesman Rupert Colville told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday that Israel's use of force was "not acceptable".

"All parties to the conflict have a responsibility to ensure the protection of civilians, to respect worldwide law, avoid incitement to violence and to limit the use of force", Austen said in his statement.

Most of the dead were killed by Israeli fire near the border.

However, Monday's protests - and those planned for Tuesday - are the culmination as they mark the anniversary of Israel's creation in 1948 and commemorate the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who subsequently fled their homes or were displaced in the war that followed.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said his forces were acting in self-defence against Gaza's Islamist rulers, Hamas.

A White House delegation and Israeli officials are set to attend an inauguration ceremony for the USA embassy later on Monday and there have been clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces along the Gaza border. Mr. Netanyahu later said that his forces were acting appropriately to defend the country's borders and that Hamas, the Islamic movement governing Gaza, was to blame for the violence.

Nearly 2500 more were injured according to Palestinian officials.

At Shifa, Gaza's main hospital, men were queuing on Tuesday to give blood.

Egypt has offered to treat some of the wounded, but getting them there is logistically challenging.

Inside the hospital, there were many with gunshot wounds.

Tensions will be high in Gaza where those killed on Monday will be buried. By midday there were no reports of new demonstrations.
