Barcelona's unbeaten season ended by five-star Levante

Sergi Roberto meanwhile will serve the second game of the four-game ban he was given by the Spanish Football Federation for the red card he saw in last Sunday's "Clasico" against Real Madrid. But then Barca started to turn up the heat, with Coutinho getting his own hat-trick before Luis Suarez took the score to 5-4.

Barcelona have only lost one of their 23 games against Levante in La Liga, a 5-1 defeat in Valencia back in October 1964.

It was 1932 when the last side, Real Madrid, went unbeaten in the top-flight but even that was across only 18 matches, in a 10-team division.

Barcelona had gone unbeaten in 43 straight matches, last losing to Malaga 2-0 in April 2017.

"It's been a long time since anyone did it and we're close to achieving it this year".

Barcelona are only two matches away from an invincible season. The unbeaten record was supposed to help atone for the European failure.

"We have a goal, which is none other than to keep us undefeated in this league campaign".

In what would surely be a routine comeback and even win for Barcelona at this point, Levante came flying out for the second-half. They move up to 15th.

In an enthralling contest, the hosts went ahead through Emmanuel Boateng.

The unfashionable outfit stunned the Catalans further after a lucky break caught out the opposing defence and Boateng rounded Marc Andre Ter Stegen and fired home for his brace on 30 minutes.

Phillipe Coutinho blasted home on the edge of the box to reduce the deficit, albeit guided by a deflection on 38 minutes.

Boateng then completed his hat-trick minutes later with a neat finish in the right corner from a low ball out wide. Enis Bardhi put Barcelona two goals behind again with a finish not too dissimilar to that which had given Barca a lifeline.

Ernesto Valverde's continued to attack and got another goal on 71 minutes, with Luis Suarez converting from the penalty spot after Busquets was fouled in the box.

But without Messi even to bring on, Levante withstood the late onslaught and should even have scored a sixth only for Ruben Rochina to prode wide after a terrible backpass by Busquets.
