Boston Dynamics SpotMini to Start Selling in 2019

Boston Dynamics, the Massachusetts-based company that builds increasingly sophisticated robots that enjoy opening doors, has released two more videos of its robots doing very clever things that will definitely not come back to haunt humanity at a later date.

"The SpotMini robot is one that was motivated by thinking about what could go in an office - in a space more accessible for business applications - and then, the home eventually", Raibert said.

The result? Spot aces it, including some particularly challenging stairs, and all while looking like a training video for the actual "Black Mirror" episode we mentioned above.

"That's a prelude to getting into a higher rate of production" in anticipation of sales next year, Raibert said.

It's unclear how much the robots will cost or who will be eligible to purchase them.

At the TechCrunch event dedicated to robotics, Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert on Friday announced that its robotic dog SpotMini already in the stage of "pre-production".

"During the autonomous run, SpotMini uses data from the cameras to localize itself in the map and to detect and avoid obstacles", the company said.

The four-legged robot extends its mechanical arm, turns the door handle and opens it, letting both robots through. It weighs in at 66 pounds and can go for around 90 minutes on a single charge.

Boston Dynamics said the company has plans with contract manufacturers to produce the first 100 SpotMinis later this year for "commercial purposes". It also takes a tumble on a banana skin, suggesting at least one way we humans can defend ourselves against any upcoming robot rampage.

Techtonic shift Founded in 1992 by an extraordinary team of engineers and scientists, Boston Dynamics was acquired by SoftBank a year ago.

Updated on May 13: The SpotMini will go on sale in 2019.
