Bridge collapses into river in Kashmir; 3 dead, 15 missing

Around 25 tourists were swept away when a bridge over a water channel collapsed in Neelum Valley of Azad Kashmir on Sunday. The bridge which was located over the Jagran Nullah in Kundal Shahi area, collapsed as it could not withstand the pressure.

He said the hanging wooden bridge was designed for locals to use in small numbers.

The bridge, that could only withstand a maximum of four people, had shown relevant signs of collapsing but the tourists still thronged the bridge. Officials have stated that death toll may soar as operation continue. Three of the bodies were identified as Shahzeb, Abdul Rehman and Muhammad Zubair from Tips College, Faisalabad, whereas, Anum, D/o Matloob, Anisa Bibi and Waleed Sajjid got injured.

Police official Mohammad Siddiq said eight of the rescued students were injured and airlifted to Muzaffarabad in a military helicopter.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has directed the deputy commissioner to speed up rescue efforts and ensure anyone responsible for negligence is brought to book.


Expressing grief over the loss of innocent lives, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa directed all possible assistance to civil administration for relief and rescue operations, said a media release by the Inter-Services Public Relations.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister (PM) Raja Farooq Haider took the notice of the incident and sought a report on it from authorities concerned.

Army troops along with doctors and paramedics also reached the incident site.

"We have recovered four bodies of boys and one of a girl".
