Buffon to play last game for Juve on Saturday

Gianluigi Buffon

"I'm his sister, I love him very much and I'm biased, but I really don't think it's time for goodbye".

Instead, while the 40-year-old Buffon says the Serie A match against Hellas Verona on Saturday will be his last for Juventus, he has received offers to play elsewhere which have changed his mind about retiring.

"I was a volleyball player, I played in Serie A and in the national team, and I quit quite young, at 27, because I had nothing left to give, I felt deflated and felt the need to start a family". I'm proud to say it's not like that.

"I want to summarise what is a special day for me, one which I arrive at with a lot of serenity and happiness", he said.

"Next week will be the week I decide what to do, but it's a decision which will not change the way I feel".

"I've told him this so many times, but Gigi is a good guy he just laughs and nearly always replies: "maybe it's better this way".

Buffon will make his 177th and final Italy appearance in a friendly against the Netherlands on June 4 and will bow out as retire as the country's most-capped player of all time. During his time with Parma he also won the Coppa Italia, UEFA Cup and Italian Supercoppa in 1999.

A third Champions League final appearance in four years was still on the agenda until the dying seconds of Juve's quarterfinal clash with Real Madrid in April.

The Italian is still facing the prospect of a European ban over comments he made on the performance of English referee, Michael Oliver.

"I'm extremely disappointed because in 23 years, playing in the Champions League, I've never been sent off or disciplined. Saturday's match is the only thing that is for certain", said Buffon.

Buffon, 40, will make his 640th Serie A appearance, falling just seven short of the league record held by Paolo Maldini.
