Click It or Ticket Seat Belt Mobilization May 21-June 3

Buckle up: Washington police step up seat belt enforcement patrols

Often, it could have been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt.

Beginning May 21 and running through June 3, the annual "Click It or Ticket" national mobilization utilizes high visibility seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, in combination with local and national publicity efforts, to reiterate the life-saving value of seat belts.

Law enforcement will be cracking down on Click It or Ticket violators around the clock.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belts save approximately 13,000 lives each year. At night from 6 p.m.to 5:59 a.m., that number soared to 56 percent of those killed. Law enforcement and safety officials want to ultimately see a 100 percent compliance rate. Included is a national publicity campaign created to ensure that drivers and passengers recognize the life-saving value of seat belts.

The campaign will run throughout the month to remind travelers to Click It or Ticket. If a driver is stopped by an officer and occupants aren't wearing the proper restraints the seatbelt laws will be strictly enforced. "Our job as a coalition is to make sure families are buckled up even before leaving the house", Drew said. "Adults should wear a seat belt - every trip, every time - and ensure children are properly buckled in an appropriate child passenger safety seat". "Remember; never place a rear-facing infant seat in front of an air bag. While we cannot always avoid a crash, we can take the responsibility to do everything in our power to protect ourselves and our loved ones".
