Authorities in Grand Junction have set up three traps for a bear that attacked a 5-year-old girl outside her home early Sunday morning.

At 2:39 a.m. deputies responded to the 3400 block of D Road in East Orchard Mesa for a report of a child attacked by a bear, according to the department. "When she went outside to investigate, she witnessed a large black bear dragging her.daughter", the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) agency said in a statement.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers are trying to find the bear with the help of federal wildlife services personnel.

She was listed in fair condition in the afternoon but chief operating officer Bryan Johnson says her family didn't want to release any more information.

The girl suffered serious injuries.

"Fortunately she had no life-threatening injuries, no injuries to her brain or chest organs or abdominal organs and no fractures". "Based on bear behavior, it's possible this bear will come back to the area". Dr. Charles Breaux, Jr.

The bear believed to have been involved was trapped and euthanized.

"The necropsy, along with DNA results will provide the confirmation, but we are confident we have the right bear", said Area Wildlife Manager Kirk Oldham.

The last human death from a bear interaction in Colorado was in 2009, according to CPW. Wildlife officers in Mesa County are now searching for the bear to make sure no one else is attacked.

Colorado has an estimated 17,000 to 20,000 bears, a population that's considered robust in a state of 5.7 million people that also attracts many tourists. Because acorns and berries that bears typically rely on are doing well in the mountains where they usually live, officials suspect the animal hibernated locally and became accustomed to easily finding food near homes, from trash, livestock feed or grills.
