Ex-CIA man named as suspect in Vault 7 leak

Joshua Schulte CIA leak Vault 7

However, Laroche says the investigation "is ongoing" with Schulte remaining "a target of that investigation".

The reports cast him as a disgruntled employee, and when he left the Central Intelligence Agency in 2016, suspicion fell upon him as "the only one to have recently departed [the Central Intelligence Agency engineering group] on poor terms", the WaPo reported, citing the Schulte statement. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents reportedly searched his Manhattan home a week after the WikiLeaks published its first Vault 7 dispatch in March 2017.

At a January hearing on child pornography charges filed against Schulte, an assistant US attorney in the Southern District of NY said the government conducted several search warrants on Schulte's home.

The New York Times first identified Schulte as a target.

USA federal prosecutor Matthew Laroche detailed the investigation during a January 8, 2018 hearing in a NY federal courtroom.

A former CIA engineer who was charged with possession of child pornography is also accused of leaking classified agency documents to Wikileaks. It was then a series of unlucky coincidences, he said, that led the government to focus in on him as a suspect in the leak investigation. The NYT said that court papers quote messages that suggest Schulte knew of encrypted images on his computer showing children being molested by adults. Prosecutors said in court last week they plan to file a new indictment in the next 45 days, according to the Times. He worked in the CIA's Engineering Development Group which designed the hacking tools used by its Centre for Cyber Intelligence.

A former employee of the national security Agency USA Edward Snowden said that Wikileaks published CIA documents appear genuine.

It's unclear why Schulte has not been charged or cleared in the breach.

Schulte said in the statement that he joined the intelligence community to fulfill what he saw as a patriotic duty to respond to the attacks of September 11, 2001. The documents themselves covered a period from 2013 to 2016, when Schulte had been employed at the agency.

Schulte said he had also been planning a vacation with his brother to Cancun, Mexico, which may have given the appearance that he was trying to flee the country. Following the search of his apartment in March 2017, prosecutors waited six months to bring the child pornography charges.

Since he's been jailed, Schulte has created a Facebook page where he posts articles criticizing the criminal justice system. Laroche was actually describing a "characterization" by Schulte's attorneys and expressing disagreement.
