Ex-PM Najib Razak banned from leaving Malaysia

Mahathir Mohamad’s opposition alliance ended the six-decade hold on power of the Barisan Nasional coalition

Malaysia's Immigration Department said today that former scandal-ridden Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife are barred from leaving the country, shortly after he announced plans for a short holiday.

A Facebook user who goes by the screen name Curi-curi Wang Malaysia shared a photo on May 11 night, on which the names of the passengers set to take the plane are MR NAJIB RAZAK and MRS ROSMAH MANSOR.

The travel ban came after Mahathir vowed to investigate the 1MDB state fund corruption scandal in which Najib is implicated. "I respect the decision and I will remain in the country with my family".

Earlier this week, Mr Najib's long-ruling Barisan Nasional coalition suffered a shock electoral defeat.

The election result is a political quake for the Muslim-majority country, sweeping aside the 60-year rule of the National Front and its leader Najib Razak, whose reputation was tarnished by a monumental corruption scandal, a crackdown on dissent and the imposition of an unpopular sales tax that hurt many of his coalition's poor rural supporters.

"We are not seeking revenge", the 92-year-old prime minister said.

The new Attorney General Mohamed Apandi Ali cleared Najib in 2016, saying the money was a donation from the Saudi royal family and that most of it was returned.

As the image of the leaked manifest for a flight to Jakarta spread like wildfire online, Najib insisted in social media posts he was planning only a "short break" overseas to rest after the election and would be back next week.

On Friday, two sources told Reuters that Mahathir will appoint a finance ministry adviser to oversee the recovery of billions of dollars allegedly stolen from 1MDB.

Mahathir, with 22 years of premiership as UMNO and BN chief, fell over with Najib since 2015 after accusing Najib of corruption related to the state investment company 1MDB.

Najib said in a tweet: "I have just been informed by the immigration department of Malaysia that my family and I are not allowed to go overseas".

Najib denies any wrongdoing.

In a move to dampen down rising tensions, Najib tweeted that he hoped the "divisive period" in the country's history would end with unity. I apologise for any shortcomings and mistakes, and I thank you, the people, for the opportunity to lead our great nation.

Filings by the US Justice Department in a civil lawsuit indicated almost $30 million of the money stolen was used to buy jewellery for the prime minister's wife, Rosmah, including a rare 22-carat pink diamond set in a necklace.

"This process has certain rules and regulations that we have to adhere to", Mahathir said.

The Amanah president responds to Rafizi Ramli who questioned the announcement of key Cabinet portfolios for Amanah, PPBM and DAP.
