Ex-Speaker Sheldon Silver convicted of corruption, again

Former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver found guilty- again

Former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has been convicted in his retrial on corruption charges.

Following a almost two-week trial, a Manhattan jury convicted Mr.

Silver collected almost $4 million in bribes and kickbacks that he disguised as legal fees from law practice in exchange for his influence in Albany, prosecutors said. In the former, Silver allegedly induced former Columbia University Dr. Robert Taub in to referring his cancer patients, in exchange for state funding for research and other perks, while receiving rainmaker fees from the law firm.

Silver, who was once a powerful ally of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), now faces 130 years in prison.

An appeals court tossed out that conviction, citing a recent Supreme Court ruling that changed the legal boundaries for public corruption.

"Sheldon Silver repeatedly used his enormous public power for his own enormous private gain", prosecutor Tatiana R. Martins told the jury Thursday.

It took less than 24 hours for the jurors to reach guilty verdicts on all seven counts of trading legislative favors for legal referral fees - via cutouts such as an asbestos doctor and various law firms.

Silver, 74, was convicted of obtaining almost $4 million in illicit payments in return for taking official actions that benefited others.
