'Exhausted' Simpson savours first win in five years

Tiger Woods made a furious charge up the leaderboard Saturday

After finishing equal 11th at the Players Championship on Sunday, Tiger Woods declared himself ready to win another title. Xander Schauffele, Charl Schwartzel and Jimmy Walker finished in a three-way tie for second place, while Jason Day and Jason Dufner tied for fifth place with at 13-under. "We did it. I love you".

Woods began the day tied for eighth, 11 strokes behind Simpson. I sat up here and said let's give him the starts, let's give him the summer, let's give him the year, let's see if he can gain some of the freedom he needs. You would think having a seven-shot lead would be easy, but it's hard to stay motivated to continue what you've been doing. "It was still hard, but I found a way to get it done". Of course after five years and so many ups and downs, all Simpson cares about is walking away with that trophy any way he can get it. Grade: A+.

Simpson's lead was down to four shots when he bogeyed the 10th, but he moved to 20-under for the tournament with birdies at the two par-fives on the back nine, the 11th and 16th.

What's this win mean for Simpson?

Every green used to be a horror chamber for Simpson, until Paul Tesori, who has become Simpson's best friend as well as his caddie (and fellow Christian), talked him into trying something different.

Despite carding a 73 in the final round, Simpson never had his lead truly threatened, reducing the TPC Sawgrass course and its potential for excitement to merely a curiosity on Mother's Day.

The 14-time Major victor finished T-11 at the recent Players Championship, another highly-encouraging performance on his quest to win his first event in five years. Not when his method of putting was banned, not when he was one of the worst on tour on the greens. So I tried it.

"I'm always a guy who likes to have a thought". He finished No. 1 in the field in putting and gained almost 10 strokes on the field (more than 50 percent of his total) with the flat stick.

After opening with rounds of 72-71, Woods, who won this championship in 2001 and 2013, said he was close to putting all the pieces of his game together and said it was just a matter of time he would do just that, especially, he added, because he had gotten his golf "feels" back. "And a year ago Wednesday, right here, Tim Clark puts that claw on him".

Duval told Golf Channel viewers in the United States: "We've all questioned what is the top for him in this comeback? It's nothing short of miraculous for us".

For Simpson, this moment was especially sweet.

"I don't know, " he said. "I didn't play particularly well in the first couple days, but I turned it around this weekend and I got it rolling", Woods said.

"No. 14, it's blowing downwind, and it's off the left, and [the pin] is on top of that crown, and I thought it [the ball] was going to skip", Woods said of the shot from 110 yards.
