Facebook rolls out Stories archive and voice posts, starting in India

The Facebook Camera will allow users to save their shots online

Finally, Facebook will let you archive your stories like it does on Instagram so you can save the stories you like the most.

When Facebook rolled out Stories globally in March of 2017, Mark Zuckerberg said he expected Stories would eventually overtake posts in feeds as the most popular way people shared content on Facebook. We've been talking to our community to understand how people want to use Stories, so we can give them the tools to create and connect in meaningful ways.

To deal with the low percentage of users sharing Facebook Stories, the social media giant is introducing new functionalities to the tool that are now being launched in India and will be shared later at a global scale.

Facebook is launching a slew of updates to its Stories feature.

The big new change for Stories will be the option to save photos and videos for later. This isn't something all new from the Menlo Park, California-headquartered company has it already offers voice messaging support to WhatsApp. These memories can be seen right when you log into your Facebook account and help you save the storage on your smartphone. Specifically, it's adding an archive for Stories posts, so you can save the ones you like to a permanent gallery.

By adding this functionality to Stories, Facebook could capitalize on some of that popularity and, perhaps, get a few more people to start using the platform. Voice posts are audio-only clips that you record when posting a Story or upload as a file, along with a photo that was taken previously. "For a lot of people, audio is a very important way for them to express themselves and communicate", said Hayes. They mostly focus on Facebook's camera app, which is embedded into the main app.

Facebook is interestingly bringing its Voice Posts feature first to Facebook Lite users, though Android users on the regular Facebook app will see its availability in the coming months. Since voice posts work in a similar fashion as stories, it will disappear after 24 hours. Users can go back and view these Stories at any time, or choose to reshare them as a post or story.

"With this week's update, you will have options to add a voice message to a colorful background or a photo from your camera gallery or saved gallery. You can still find it in your Stories Archive if you have Archive turned on", explains Hayes.

Another upcoming feature allows users to archive their Stories, not unlike Instagram's relatively new archiving feature. If you do not want to archive your Stories, you have the option to decline.

It makes sense that these new features are rolling out to India first, as they appear to mostly be geared towards developing markets where flagship smartphones are either unaffordable or non-existent.
