Ford Resuming Output of F-Series After Supplier Fire

Ford (F) is resuming production of its F-Series pickup trucks, ending assembly line shut downs at two of its most important plants that have lasted more than a week.

Ford Motor Company is restarting production of the popular F-150 at Dearborn Truck Plant Friday after just over one week of downtime.

The fire damaged the Eaton Rapids, Michigan factory of the Meridian Magnesium group on May 2nd. "The ramp-up time to full production is improving every day".

Dearborn-based Ford put together a team that refurbished and relocated tooling needed to make parts for the vehicles.

Ford is resuming production of its F-150 pickup following a fire at a plant where parts for the vehicle are made.

Ford recovered, repaired and validated most dies that were at the Eaton Rapids facility, and Meridian is now producing parts for the F-150 at two locations - undamaged sections of the Eaton Rapids factory and Nottingham.

To get production up as quickly as possible, Ford airlifted an 87,000-pound die to a Meridian plant in the United Kingdom on a Russian-built Antonov An-124 Ruslan, one of the world's largest cargo planes. Production of bolsters for Super Duty is also restarting at Eaton Rapids. Rickenbacker had the capacity to handle such a large piece of equipment and allowed an Antonov An-124 Russian plane - typically used to transport trains, dump trucks, and even a 25-foot sea yacht - to take off as soon as the equipment was loaded.

"We were working around the clock, across the ocean, with the teams there to really get the facilities back up and running", Hau Thai-Tang, Ford's head of purchasing and product development, said on the call.

Ford expects lost production of the F-Series will hurt Q2 EPS by $0.12-$0.14 but reaffirms its previous FY 2018 adjusted EPS guidance range of $1.45-$1.70.

Ford has said its financial results for the second quarter will take a hit, though the exact cost remains to be seen.
