Former Senator Harry Reid Underwent Surgery for Pancreatic Cancer

Ex-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has surgery for pancreatic tumor

Reid underwent surgery in 2015 after he fell and injured his eye while exercising at his home in Henderson.

Former U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada will undergo chemotherapy after doctors removed a tumor from his pancreas today. They say doctors caught the tumor early during a routine screening and his prognosis is good. "He is now out of surgery, in good spirits and resting with his family".

Mr. Reid, known for a biting, acerbic wit and a penchant for partisan pugnacity, told The New York Times in March that he was ready to leave Washington behind.

Reid, a Democrat and former Senate majority leader, sponsored or signed onto more than 500 pieces of legislation that later became law and helped choke off funding for a proposed nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain.

Reid, 78, left the Senate in 2016 after serving for 30 years. "The doctors say pancreatic cancer is not a great thing, but given that the operation couldn't have gone much better, we are all praying for Harry's speedy recovery", he said.

On Monday, his successor as Democratic leader, Senator Chuck Schumer of NY, wrote on Twitter: "Spoken to family and it seems @SenatorReid's operation went well". "Harry is a fighter - literally and figuratively - I know he is going to approach his recovery with the same energy and tenacity and resolve that defined his public life".
