Here's why: Pro-Brexit group fined £70000 by United Kingdom watchdog

Leave.EU fined £70000 over EU referendum funding and spending

Pro-Brexit group Leave.EU was fined £70,000 ($95,000, 79,000 euros) on Friday for exceeding campaign spending laws ahead of the 2016 vote to exit the European Union, the UK Electoral Commission said.

The commission said it suspected criminal offences may have been committed, and the responsible person, Leave.EU CEO Liz Bilney, had been referred to the police.

Leave.EU exceeded the spending limit for non-party registered campaigners by at least 10 percent, it said.

In a statement the group said: "Leave.EU have informed the EC we will be challenging their findings through the courts and look forward to "robustly defending our position".

The report also suggests that the Cambridge Analytica boss, Alexander Nix, overstated his company's association with Leave.EU in public, in the hope of winning business from the campaign group.

The investigation concluded that Leave.EU exceeded its statutory spending limit and delivered incomplete and inaccurate spending and transaction returns.

However, the commission found no evidence that Leave.EU had received any donations or worked with Cambridge Analytica, which this month announced it was closing after the fallout from allegations that personal data from millions of people had been harvested.

Leave.EU and Cambridge Analytica had previously denied working together on the referendum.

"Lastly, Depart.EU failed to offer the required bill or receipt for 97 funds of over £200, totalling £80,224". These are serious offences.

Leave.EU aimed to become as the official pro-Brexit campaign in the 2016 referendum, but lost out to Vote Leave, which was supported by many Conservative and some Labour MPs.

29 may 2017, the European Commission has published key requirements for the United Kingdom in the process of withdrawal from the EU. Leave.EU's spending return did not include spending with either organisation.

"We view the Electoral Commission announcement as a politically motivated attack on Brexit and the 17.4 million people who defied the establishment to vote for an independent Britain".

He added: '(The commission) went big game fishing and found a few "aged" dead sardines on the beach. "They had to try and get us on something, so they found whatever they could". "They have raised a number of other technical reporting errors which we dispute in full and intend to appeal against", Leave.EU said.

The commission said it was satisfied that the overall overspend "was in fact greater, given the failure to report an appropriate proportion of the cost of services provided by Goddard Gunster". So much for the big conspiracy. Some Members have also denounced campaign groups for permanence of circumventing spending limits, but Electoral Commission has found no reason to open an investigation.
