How to Watch the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery

Eight players who might fit the Cavs at No. 8

Hoping to cash in on some decades-old luck and nostalgia, Orlando Magic co-founder Pat Williams will have a blast from the past in his possession as he keeps a talking Lil' Penny doll with him during the National Basketball Association draft lottery Tuesday night.

So how does it work?

On Tuesday night, the 14 teams who didn't make the playoffs will be hoping for good luck. There is a combined 2.9 percent chance of the Celtics winding up with the Lakers' pick at No. 2 or 3. The team has missed the playoffs for six consecutive seasons and is making its sixth consecutive trip to the lottery.

The team with the initial four-number combination wins the lottery.

While those odds are long, add a top-three talent to Griffin, Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson - or shuffle some of those components in a trade - and the Pistons could quickly move into a competitive position in the East. The order of pick Nos.

When the order of the first 14 teams is drawn Tuesday night, though, the Wolves will try something they haven't done since 2004: They're going to watch from a distance with a shrug.

As the Wine & Gold get set to keep tabs on the upcoming NBA Draft Lottery, Cavs.com dissects some digits from the past ping pong balls in this installment of, "By the Numbers" presented by FanDuel. All are required to submit their electronic devices (cell phones) so they can not communicate with anyone until after the order is revealed.

Put another way, if C's don't secure the Lakers' 2018 pick, they'll have at least an 86 percent chance of acquiring the Kings' 2019 pick.

Because Orlando finished with the NBA's fifth-worst record, it will have an 8.8 percent chance of winning the lottery, a 9.6 percent likelihood of receiving the second pick and 10.7 percent odds of picking third.

These stipulations are all based on language from previous trades initiated by those teams. The drawing begins at the 4:45 mark of the video.
